Hymes Research and some of my Family Lines
Coats of Arms were developed in the Middle Ages as a means of
identifying warriors in battle and tournaments. The present function of
the Coat of Arms (although still one of identity) serves more to preserve the
traditions that arose from its earlier use.
Heraldic artists of old developed their own unique language to
describe an individual Coat of Arms recorded in ancient heraldic archives. Our
research indicated that there are often times a number of different Coats
of Arms recorded for a specific surname. When possible we select and translate
the Coat of Arms most representative of your surname or its variant for
illustration.
THE HYMES COAT OF ARMS (ILLUSTRATED ON LINK PAGE), IS IN THE TRADITIONAL
LANGUAGE OF HERALDRY, THE ARMS (SHIELD) WOULD BE DESCRIBED AS:
“GU.; A VERTICAL BAND SA.; OVER ALL AN ENGLISH HELMET OR SURMOUNTED BY
TWO GERMAN HELMETS OR, PLACED SIDE BY SIDE.”
WHEN TRANSLATED THE BLAZON ASLO DESCRIBES THE ORIGINAL COLORS OF THE HYMES ARMS
AS:
“RED; A BLACK VERTICAL BAND,’ OVER ALL IS A GOLD ENGLISH HELMET SURMOUNTED BY
TWO GOLD GERMAN HELMETS PLACED SIDE BY SIDE.”
Early Hymes Immigrants to North America.
The Hymes individuals who left their homes for life in the New World
were undoubtedly courageous. Who were these early Hymes immigrants?
Research through thousands of reference books containing ships’ passenger
lists, genealogical registers, and other official records led to the discovery
of the early Hymes immigrants.
In the listing below, you will find the reference book where the Hymes
immigrant or immigrants were found. The book’s author is given, the title, the
publisher, and the year of publication.
Then, following the reference book listing, you’ll find the immigrant’s
name, their age (if known) at the time of arrival in the New World, the port
of entry or area where they first settled, and the page number of the reference
book where their name was found. Should an *fnna… appear, the first name is
not available or readable.

Surname:
The last name was orginally ... Heim. Now, when you get to the family in PA >
MD > VA > TN the spelling changed to read Heim, Himes / Hymes, Himes, Hime ...
depending on the English thought process. Some would spell it the English way
..Hymes. But,I have found in my surname search that orginally it could have been
as far back in the Old Testament with Jewish surnames meaning home. There was a
male Heim from Bonn, Germany that was Jewish and gave his oath of alleigence on
the Old Testament when he arrived in Philadelphia Harbour in the early 1700's.
Now, I also found we that were from the Principality of Nassau, Germany and were
Lutheran. If we were with Count Dillenburg's 5th son from the high and low
countries (meaning Holland) after the 30 years war, he and his compadres hightail
it to lands in Germany when he was 21 years old as to not be apperhended by the
Catholic Church and all that.

1998 Oley Yoder Reunion
On July 18, 1998, the Oley Yoder Association held their third annual family
reunion at the Oley Fire House in Oley, Pennsylvania. Approximately 70
family members enjoyed the social/historical event highlighted by the abundance
of socialization, family renewals and a review of "some of" the latest historical
family research information.
The Oley Yoders are direct lineage of Johannas and Yost Joder, who as early as
1714 settled in the Oley Valley, Berks County. Descendants of Hans and Yost,
established settlements throughout the Oley Valley, with the original family
located in what is today called the village of Pleasantville.
The association has been actively devoted to the care and maintenance of
the family cemetery (Pleasantville Union Cemetery). The reunion attendees visited
the cemetery where both Hans and Yost are believed to be buried. The cemetery is
also the location of the oldest Yoder tombstone in America (Daniel Yoder
died 1747-OH14).
The days activities was accented by a presentation by Eleanor Trout Shaner, an
executive committee member, who reviewed the origins of the Yoder family
dating back to the 1500's, the religious persecution taking place at that
time in Switzerland and the immigration of Hans and Yost to America. She
discussed the tribulations and uncertainties of the boat trip across the
Atlantic Ocean, their marriages in America and the ensuing land purchases in
the Oley Valley region. Richard H. Yoder, the association's historian,
showed slides of the land grants, map locations and subsequent purchases,
homes and buildings, and cemetery burial locations of the early Yoder immigrants.
Joseph Yoder, president-elect, announced the Association's plans to host a
"national level" reunion in the summer of 2001. Over 400 people attended the
1996 national Oley Yoder family reunion. Joe Yoder also presided as the auctioneer
of a "white elephant sale", where proceeds were donated toward the cemetery
maintenance fund.
The oldest individual attending the reunion activities was Maude Yoder Hoch, 86
years young, from Oley, with the youngest attendee, Rebekah Hymes, age 16,
from Colorado. Rebekah is the granddaughter of Mary Jane Gofus...

HYMES - KANE
My grandfather, Robert Lee Kane, was born in Macon in 1878 to Benjamin Kane and
Margaret Josephine Hymes. Benjamin Kane died a few years later so Margaret took
Robert to The Bethseda Home for Boys in Savannah so she could work as a live-in
domestic. Benjamin is said to have worked on the railroad and died of yellow
fever. He is supposed to have had a brother. I would like proof of birth of
Robert Lee Kane, marriage of Benjamin & Margaret, and death of Benjamin. I am
stumped!!!
