HUGHES RECORD-Compiled by Nora Hicks Rogerson Kerns 1960.
The Hughes according to the records are descended from ELLISTONGLODRYAL, Earl of
Herford, who was born 933 direct descendent from BELI MAWR, "THE GREAT KING OF BRITON".
The Hughes family is among the forty-nine best families selected by the American
Historical Genealogical Society. For several centuries the Hughes lived in Wales
and were of the Protestant faith.
THE HUGHES family has been prominent in the British Empire and in the United States;
its members having played important roles in war and peace. Family price is a
commendable trait and should be cultivated. All Hughes have just cause to be proud of
their family history and traditions.
Rev. John Hughes (poet) was born in Glamorganshire, Wales, in 1702. He had a brother,
Thomas Hughes, living in America, who wrote of the wonderful possibilities in the
New World. In 1749, the four oldest boys, WILLIAM, JAMES, THOMAS, AND NATHANIAL,
packed their worldly possessions and set forth on a long journey. They had a
long, stormy voyage of nine weeks at sea. The ship went down off the coast of what
is now North Carolina. The brothers were rescued by other ships after days at sea. All
their clothing and gold packed in their boat were lost. They never saw each other
again.
THOMAS worked his way up the James River and settled in the valley of Virginia;
JAMES was later heard from, living in the New England States, and WILLIAM in Missouri;
NATHANIAL, the youngest, came up the Chesapeake Bay and settled in Maryland. He
married Isabelle Grimes. He served in the Revolutionary War. The mother died near the
close of the war and he, with his four sons, WILLIAM, JOSEPH, ROLLINS, and NATHAN JR.,
moved to the "TENMILE COUNTRY", then a part of Virginia, now near Jefferson, Penna.
They performed services in the ranks of the Frontiersmen. The father went on to
Missouri looking for the living lost brother. Joseph, while in the army at Fort Pitt,
married SARAH (Daughter of John and Elizabeth Swan). WILLIAM married her sister,
Martha. ROLLINS married Susannah _____. They were baptized at Muddy Creek when
Goshen Baptist Church met at that place, on October 27, 1787. He had warranted a tract
of land called 'RICHMOND' onOctober 17, 1785 located near the mouth of Coal Lick.
They sold this and moved to Missouri. William and Joseph both served under Captain
William Herrod on the CLARK EXPEDITION. They were granted 108 acres of land for
their services. They sold this land and moved to Missouri. Joseph obtained a
pension in April 1834 in Howard County, Missouri. Nathan was living across the
"TENMILE COUNTRY" from his brother Rollins' land when he served in Captain James
Archer's Militia Co. He had this tract of land warranted to him under the name of
"MOUNT PLEASANT" on February 6, 1788. He was married twice: Leah and Rebecca. He had
four sons and three daughters.
Nathan III was born 1785, died in 1854. He married Nancy Shearin on 1809. She
was the daughter of Henry and Sarah Miller Shearin, born 1786 - died 18__. Both

BATTLE HYMN OF HUGHES
TUNE: "BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC"
1. The ancient sons of Hughes
abode in England and in Wales;
Where English tongue is spoken now
The name of Hughes prevails.
How could the nation but go forward
When Hughes never fail
THE CLAN GOES MARCHING ON!
CHORUS
Glory to our grand old family -
Hughes of Middletown and Shredley -
Hughes of Kinmel and Coldhelen -
And of America!
2. Hevfa, Thomas David, Hugh, were
fathers of our clan;
Prosterity of Aaron Hughes
and Humphrey never ran.
Henry was quite virile,
Powell was a sturdy man,
THE CLAN GOES MARCHING ON!
(Repeat Chorus)
3. Edward, naval hero to five battles
bravely went;
Christopher, was the bearer of the
treaty signed at Ghent;
John was the lyric poet -
everything he said he meant
(Repeat Chorus)
4. There's something strong and mighty
in a good old family name;
The name of Hughes shined very high
upon the scroll of fame;
For nearly all the sons of Hugh
pursue a lofty aim
THE CLAN GOES MARCHING ON!
(Repeat Chorus)
5. Our grand old family cherishes
-traditions of the past
With the world's great movements we
have all our fortunes cast;
And when we pledge our honor, we are
loyal to the last,
THE CLAN GOES MARCHING ON!
(Repeat Chorus)
6. We have our dukes and peasants,
Common folk and blue blood too
We greet each other with a smile
And "Cousin, howdy-do!"
This goes with all the HUGHESES and
it goes with me and you,
THE CLAN GOES MARCHING ON!
(Repeat Chorus)
7. To every corner of our land we
we sound our bugle call,
Two hundred thousand cousins
hear and answer, one and all;
The echo of their footsteps
like Niagra's waterfall
THE CLAN GOES MARCHING ON!
(Repeat Chorus)
8. If you claim the blood of HUGHES,
Then join the chorus of the clan,
In our Records and Reunions,
All according to our plan.
The name to highest honors
Boost it in every way you can,
THE CLAN GOES MARCHING ON!(Repeat Chorus)
