Subject: Re: researching Stickel
Hi,
Thanks for answering.
David Stickel, merchant, farmer and liveryman of Perryopolis, was born in
Fayette Co. Pa., Sept. 4, 1837. He is the son of the late George
Stickel, who
was an honest and hard working man, and came to Perry Twp. about a century ago,
about 1800, and settled on a part of the George Washington lands, near
where the Washington Coke works are now situated.
The valley in which George Stickel located was named Stickel Valley, after him.
David Stickel was reared to hard work, obtained a common school
education, and
has made his own way in life.
He now owns a good store, has a first class livery, and is engaged to a
considerable extent in farming.
He is a democrat politically, but is no politician, and gives
his time chiefly
to his different business enterprises.
In 1857, David Stickel married Margaret McClain, a daughter of John and Mary
McClain.
To their union was born 4 sons; George F., born Feb. 2, 1858, a partner with
his father in the mercantile business, who on June 16, 1896, wed Annie B. Nutt,
who was a daughter of the late William and Mary McCuen Nutt.
Mrs. George F. Stickel was born in 1865 and died in 1897, leaving one child,
a son, who soon followed her to the tomb.
John, born Oct. 31, 1859, and married Annie Forsythe. Harry, born in 1865
and Elmer P. born in 1869, married Mary Wilkes in 1894 and has two children, Margaret
and Arthur.
Mrs. Stickel died Dec. 27, 1889 and in 1891, David Stickel married his second
wife, Nevada Armstrong.
By his second marriage, Mr. Stickel has two children, Gertrude, born
May 26, 1892 and David, born Apr. 10, 1896.
The Stickels were originally of the Quaker faith.
I am researching Elmer 1869 - 1946 and Mary Wilkes 1876 - 1949.
They are buried in the Quaker Church cemetery in Perryopolis.
Would also like
to know where Davids Father, George came from.

I was given some copies of old obits from the years around 1913-1918 and thought
that this was the most interesting one. I have been hesitant about putting it
on because of the copyright laws. I read in one of my e-mails that anything
before 1923 is safe. I hope that is true.
Beverly
Connellsville Courier, March 1910
Traces Marietta Family History to Duke of Orleans
Ohio Woman Here on Visit, Tells of Her Researches.
DESCENDED FROM ROYALTY
Three sons of Louis Philippe Came to America With Lafayette's Army to
Fight for the American Colonies; Marietta's of Town Descendants.
Mrs. L. S. Colburn, of Columbus O., has about completed an
interesting story of
the Marietta family of which she is a member.
Mrs. Colburn is the wife of Rev. Colburn, a Baptist minister at Columbus, and
is visiting her sister, Mrs. Z. S. Moon of Carnegie Ave.
Since a small child she has been interested in the family name and its
origin. For the many years she has been compiling the history and in search
of data has traveled extensively and visited many public libraries. She was
successful in discovering how the name was derived through the American mister
to France, to whom she wrote seeking information.
Luis Philippe, Duke of Orleans and the great grandfather of Mrs. Colburn,
while banished from France met and married Marie Etta Amelia de Bourbon, daughter
of Frederick IV King, Naples and Venice. The court of France on account of a feud
between the two families, changed the name to Marietta. After the accession of
Louis XVIII, they returned to France and later to England and during the French
Revolution, LaFayette and LaFitte selected him king thinking him the best available
leader of the liberal monarchial party. He was dethroned in 1843 and fled to England,
where he went into private life. He died in 1850 and his wife died in August 1866.
Louis Philippe Marietta's three sons, George, Jacob and Joseph came to
America with Lafayette's army. One brother was lost, and no trace of
him was ever found. Joseph Marietta, one of the brothers, was the father of Jacob
Marietta, who was born and reared at Mill run and died there.
Jacob's children are Mrs. L. S. Colburn, C Columbus, O.; Mrs. Z. S. Moon,
Connellsville; John Marietta, Dunbar; George Marietta, Mill Run; and Mrs. Bertha
Moon, McKeesport. George Marietta, who came here with his brothers, was the
great grandfather of Mayor Rockwell Marietta.

JOHN KURTZ DIES AT 88; LIVED IN CITY ALL HIS LIFE
Member of Family Long Identified With Connellsville Affairs.
SERVED TERM AS BURGESS
Learned Hatter's Trade in His Father's Factory When Youth But Engaged in the
Mercantile BusinessIn Later Years; Family of Fighters
John Kurtz, one of Connellsville's oldest and best known citizens, died
early this morning at his home at the corner of Pittsburg street and Crawford
avenue, following a brief illness which resulted from a fall about two weeks
ago. He was 88 years old. Mr.Kurtz suffered a slight stroke following this
apparently trivial mishap but was not compelled to take his bed until Wednesday
of this week. He was conscious to the last.
Mr. Kurtz was born in Connellsville and lived his life here. He came of a
distinguished family, one that has been prominent in civic and business affairs
for several generations. He also came from a family of fighters, being one of
four brothers all of whom saw service in the Civil War. He was a brother of
William F. Kurtz, who fell at Fredericksburg and in whose honor the local G.
A. R. post is named.
Three generations of the Kurtz family have served from time to time as
burgess of Connellsville. Josiah Kurtz, his father, was burgess in 1831. Fifty
years later, in 1881 John Kurtz was elected to that position, while his son,
Josiah B. Kurtz served as burgess in 1893, 1894, 1896 and from 1900 to 1902.
John Kurtz's career as an office-holder, was confined to his single term
as burgess. His father was first elected to office in 1826, when he was named
borough treasurer. He was in the town council in 1833 and again in 1867, and
was treasurer in 1874 and 1876.
Josiah and Elizabeth Kurtz, parents of John Kurtz were natives of Somerset,
coming to Connellsville about 1825. John Kurtz was their oldest child. He was
born in Connellsville, on the site of the Stader building, at the corner of
Main street and Meadow Lane, on October 7, 1826 There were seven children in family,
four of whom are still living. All four of the sons of Josiah Kurtz served in
the Civil War. They were William F. Kurtz, Henry Kurtz, Samuel Kurtz, who died
about five years ago, and John Kurtz. John Kutrz enlisted in 1865 and served
for nine months in the Sixth Heavy Artillery. The sisters who are living are
Mrs.Carrie Stillwagon, Miss Ellen Kurtz and Mrs. Christina Kilpatrick, wife
of Worb? Kilpatrick.
On January 1, 1850, John Kurtz married Miss Catherine Keepers. She died in 1916.
Five children were born to this union, Josiah B. Kurtz of Connellsville,
Isaac W. Kurtz of Peru, Ind., Harry L. Kurtz of Pittsburg, Mrs. Elizabeth B.
Freed of town, and J. Charles Kurtz who died a few years ago. John Kurtz is
also survived by a single grandchild, Miss Frances H. Freed.
Josiah Kurtz was a hat manufacturer and had an extensive business in the
early days of the borough. His factory and store occupied what is now the Stader
building, on Main street. Although John Kurtz learned the hatter's trade at
an early age, he never followed it to any great extent, spending most of his time
in the store. He remained in business until about 1900. The hats made by Josiah
Kurtz had a wide reputation. They were sold in all parts of the country; and not
infrequently shipments were made to Cincinnati and other points by boat, the
Youghiogheny being navigable in those times.
In addition to his duties in the store which he conducted, John Kurtz was also
a notary public and conveyancer. It is said that he has probably written more
wills than any man in Connellsville. For many years he was practically the
only man to whom such matters were taken. He also engaged rather extensively in
the realty business.
For the past several years Mr.Kurtz had been in feeble health. He came down
town regularly, however, and was a familiar figure. He invariably wore
a high silk hat, which seemed incongruous only to the younger generation. Mr.
Kurtz was probably the best known of the older residents of town, and was
highly respected by all. Since the death of his wife in 1910, he and his son,
Josiah B. Kurtz continued to make their home in the South Pittsburg street
residence. The dwelling was erected about 12 years ago, following the
sale of the Kurtz property on East Main street to the Elks. They had resided on
Main street about 30 years prior to that sale moving to there from the home
in the downtown section.
Mr. Kurtz was member of General Worth Encampment, Independent Order of Odd
Fellows. He had been a member of the Odd Fellows for 40 years and they will
have charge of the funeral services, which will be held at 2 o'clock Monday
afternoon at the home. Rev. G. L.C. Richardson, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal
Church and Rev. T. H. Pershing, a former pastor, will officiate. Interment will be
private in Chestnut Hill cemetery. Mr. Kurtz was a member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church for many years.

Mary Hamilton was my third grade teacher at Areford School, South Union
School District. The room was on the first floor with windows to the street. We
could look out into the parking lot of South Union High School and also see Mrs.
Hamilton's house which was on the corner. She walked to school each day. She was
rather formal, I believe she wore a hat and gloves to school which she would
remove when she arrived. She was not a TLC teacher, but she was nice. She was
however the only teacher who ever made me stand in the corner. She and her
husband had a Willis sedan that was always washed and waxed and I thought that car
was great.

MAN HAD $ 200,000, DIES AT COUNTY HOME
An aged Perry Twp. man who died last month in the County Home, was
worth between $ 200,000 and $ 250,000,was revealed today.
IVAN A. ZIMMERMAN,82, of Layton Pa., had lived what an acquaintance
called a "very frugal life"
He was in the habit of walking the four miles from Layton to
Perryopolis and
hitchhiking on Route 51 , from there to Uniontown or Pittsburgh.
He sold small quantities of eggs and poultry from a farm
he owned in
Westmoreland Co.
He ate dinner frequently at the County Home, and when he became sick,
he was admitted there as a patient.
One night when he came to the home for dinner, " his legs just gave
out and he couldn't leave, " an official said.
BANK SAVINGS
Yet when authorities entered his home at Layton, they found that he had over
$ 200,000 - mostly in bank saving certificates. Records filed in the estate
indicated this.
Mr. Zimmerman, a retired railroad telegrapher, had savings accounts
in at least five different banks, most of them in Pittsburgh, one of them
alone amounted to $ 82.000.
His ownership of the farm, between West Newton and Mount Pleasant, also
was a surprise to friends in the Perry area. For the last few years he had
tenants on the farm.
WIFE DIED IN 1958
Mr. Zimmerman had lived alone in the house at Layton since the death of
his wife in 1958. Their one son had died some years ago.
The house, is an ordinary two- story frame dwelling. Police
officers said
it was in poor condition.
Mr. Zimmerman was not a recluse in the sense of "shutting himself up."
He wore proper clothing and kept himself clean.
He made frequent trips to Uniontown and was well known in several downtown
stores.
When he had to make a trip, he hitchhiked... and he didn't live in the
style one would expect of a man who had a comfortable sum " salted away ."
RAILROAD TELEGRAPHER
Mr. Zimmerman worked for many years as a telegrapher for the
Baltimore and
Ohio Railroad, starting about 1900 when he was a young man. He retired prior
to World War 11, but was recalled to work during the war years because of the
shortage of manpower, retiring again after the war was over. Apparently his
financial worth was based entirely on his savings, coupled perhaps with
wise investments.
Friend's described him as an intelligent, well-spoken man.
Some indication of his financial status could have been gained perhaps,
by the fact that he buried his wife in Jefferson Memorial Park, at Whitehall,
near Pittsburgh, a cemetery decidedly not in the
"inexpensive class."
He was also buried there on Jan. 25.
Mr. Zimmerman was admitted to the County Home on Jan. 5 and died on Jan.22.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 24, at the Blair Funeral Home, Perryopolis.
Meanwhile , neighbors hadn't seen him around the house, and called Perry Twp.
Police Chief, John Lesho.
He and Perryopolis, Police Chief, Louis Martinak entered the house but
did not see anything of great value.
After learning that Mr. Zimmerman was in the County Home, they didn't
investigate further.
Chief Lesho said that there was an indication that the house could have
been burglarized.
Letters of administration have been granted to Mr. Zimmerman's only
survivors,- two brothers, Roy Zimmerman, who is Superintendent of Schools in
Englewood N. J., and Walter H. Zimmerman, a Ringtown Pa. (Schuylkill Co.)
businessman.
They retained State Sen. Thomas Kalman as legal counsel. Senator Kalman
said that the inventory and appraisal will be filed within a couple of weeks.
Ivan Zimmerman died Jan. 22. 1962. His nickname was Zip.
