At the head of the tax list is: "The Duplicate of Hempfield Township, 
March the 11th, 1789. William Brown, Collector [Jacob Mackline, Collector, 
is crossed out.] Amount, State {66.s4.d2; County, {60.s6.d2. Signed by us 
as Assessors: Robt. Fleming, Robt. Taylor, Robt. McKee."
"Benjamin Lodge, Esqr." Also appears on the front page, but with no explanation. 
"(s.m)" denotes a single man. The first amount is the State tax, the second 
the County tax. All amounts are in pounds, shillings, pence.

Hempfield Township tax lists for the years 1786, 1798, 1802, 1805, and 
1810 were published in the Society's Special Publication No. 33, Tax Lists, 
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 1786 -  1810 (Washington, 1968). 
The 1831 list was published in Old Westmoreland, volume 5 (1984), 
numbers 1 and 2. According to Special Publication No. 33, copies of the 
lists for 1813, 1814, 1818, 1820, 1825, 1826, and 1833 are in the Society's 
Library.
