Howard Scott
Note:Bessie Scott was formerly Bessie Clovis of Pine Bank.
On Easter Sunday, April 7, 1901, the death angel came into the happy home
of Lonzo and Bessie Scott and took from their arms their little boy, Howard
Dwight, aged five months being buried on his birthday. He died of that
dreaded de spinal meningitis or brain fever. To his parents the whole
world is just now a blank. But our loved one is not dead but sleepeth.
He shall awaken and we shall find him in the morning, when the glad day
of Heaven breaks we shall meet our darling, and shall see that angel face
smile that we love and have lost awhile. For God would never let us long
for him with such a strong and holy love if he was not waiting for us.
That God of love from whom every divine mercy flows, would never leave
created in us that strong and clinging love of his own free grace,
giving us a few short days of life together; every day making him nearer
and dearer till heart and soul were wrapped up in his existence and then
rend them from us forever leaving us with torn and bleeding hearts and
agonizing memories of joy forever past. Oh, no, God is love. He pitieth
us even as a father pitieth his children. The funeral was held at his
home by Rev. John Simpson, of Waynesburg, after which the little body was
borne tenderly and sorrowfully to the beautiful Rosemont cemetery
at Rogersville.

=======================
In memory of our father, Mr. John Shanes, who died at his home near Brave,
Pa., January 26, 1904, of throat and lung trouble. He was born July 23,
1844, and was therefore aged 69 years, 6 months and 3 days.
He was the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Shanes, deceased, the Shanes being
a very old and prominent family coming to Greene County when it was not
but a howling wilderness. After a long conflict with disease, our common
foe Death triumphed, but the note of triumph was lost in the shout of
victory, for it was sweet music to him to hear the muffled rhythm of
the boatman as he came to take him home.
At an early age he enlisted in Co. K 14th WV Vol. Infantry and was in
service from September 4, 1862 until July 6, 1865. He endured many
hardships which is due to a soldier, and contracted his after diseases from
relapse of the measles, starvation etc... Congress awarded him a Medal of
Honor for his bravery in a skirmish at Carter's Farm, Va. of which he
was proud to possess. He finally had an artist in Chicago to paint a
"Scene of the Skirmish" which he always delighted to look upon and to
show to his associates and soldier brethren.
He was married to Miss Mary Ann Stiles, March 8, 1868, and lived a cheerful
and devoted companion during his stay on Earth, and on up to the time of
his death he made remarkable efforts to cheer the hearts of his dear friends,
but by and by he gave up to the Conqueror, and passed silently away to
his home beyond this mortal day, leaving his dear children, companions
and friends to hold in memory of his life all that honesty and kindness
could do. His walk as a son, brother and companion and a father was clothed
with the grace and goodness due a soldier boy for his loved ones. But
the charms of his devotions lifts the dear memories of him far above the
ills of life. It hath been the providence of God to pluck the fair blossoms
of life's charms to bless those who remain in the memories of all the
dear blessed associations, and it doth please God to give unto his followers
a sweet rest in the immortal, and to join his dear friends on the other
shore.
As a tribute to his memory, it can be said he was a good man. He was widely
known and loved by everyone, for amid the tumults of life, with it's toil
and care, when the dark clouds of worldly strife were passing o'er amid
the vicissitudes of earthly sojourn, he looked upon the sunshine that all
may behold if their minds are inclined to that which is good. And his
goodness will cast a halo behind him, and those who profit by the example
will be rejoiced when they are about to pass the portal that closes
forever, their earthly existence. Sad it is that family ties must be
broken here that the best and sweetest of friends close their eyes and
fold their hands forever. That the form we loved so well must be laid away
in a cold and silent tomb. But joyful the thought when we remember
that the conscious existence, the unquenchable spark, the God given soul
has only gone behind the veil that divides the seen from the unseen,
that over there, there will be no more sufferings, no more sorrows,
but all is brightness and beauty and that the dear ones will await our
coming and greet us with glad hands. There will be no sad farewells,
no more partings, but the endless ages of eternity. We will enjoy peace
and gladness, the beauty, the sunshine of Gods love and companionship
of the redeemed. He leaves a wife and nine children, namely: Fred of
Chicago, J.W.S. of Washington, Mrs. J. S. Brock of Waynesburg, Mrs. W.W.
Phillips and Mrs. Ralph Phillips, Brave, Pa. Mrs. W.H. Laughlin,
Spraggs,
Pa., and Grant, Dennis, and Lydia at home. Also two brothers; Asa Shanes
of Arbela, Mo. and Jacob Shanes of Daybrook, WV., Jacob Wiley of Wise, WV.
and Anderson Wiley of Missouri are the only surviving Uncles.
Funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev. Hart, after which the
G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) took charge of the remains. After a
beautiful, but impressive service by the old soldiers, all that was earthly
of our beloved one was lowered into the cold grave.

Cephas Shriver
On Monday morning, February 1, 1909, just as dawn was awakened and nature
loosed bright to us, one who was young in years closed his eyes to all
earthly scenes to awaken in eternity. But blessed are they who sleep in
Jesus for there shall be a glad awakening, the subject of this sketch,
was Cephus Shriver, son of Jacob L. Shriver, of Brave. Pa.
He was aged 20 years 6 months when told that he could not get well. He
replied: "I am young and have not lived many years, but if it's God's will
I am ready to die." Ceph was sick but one short week. The cause of his
death being pneumonia, he told them at the beginning of his sickness
he would never be any better. Those who were with him will often think in
the coming years of the bright smile that was on his face when he said:
I have asked God to help me, " and expressed his willingness to die. How
we watched and waited with the hope that there might be some change for
the better. But God said come (illegible) respected young man and by his
kind ways, sunny disposition and willingness to help others, won many
friends and will be greatly missed from among them. Oh how we are again
reminded that death is no respecter of persons. No one knows at what time
he will leave the shores of time and touch the border of eternity.
All was done that loving hands and medical aid could do. But to no avail.
The golden gate was opened and a gentle voice said: Come". But we would
not call him back to this world of sin. For the one who goes is happier,
than those he leaves behind. Short services were held from his home on
Tuesday, February 2 at 11a.m. The remains were taken to Mt. Zion where the
funeral was preached by Rev. O. C. Carlile.
Internment in Mt. Zion cemetery.

End Comes to Cowley Pioneer Following Fall at Enid"
"Adam Staggers, a resident of Cowley County (Kansas) for 47 years and
a prominent member and active worker in Siverd Post G.A.R., died Tuesday
evening at 7:15. Death came to him at Enid Springs hospital in Enid where
he had been taken after a fall, in which he was fatally injured, on the
stairway at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Raymond. H. Rowland of Enid
(Oklahoma).
Mr. Staggers was well-known in Winfield where he was a familiar figure. For
many years he held the office of quartermaster in Siverd Post G. A. R. and
kept the records. He was interested in all matters which pertain to patriotic
celebrations. His activity for and interest in the Winfield Old Soldiers
reunion which is held yearly was a large factor in its success. Although
near 85 years old and quite deaf, Mr. Staggers was able to do the collecting
necessary to finance this year's reunion, as he has done for many years.
He started last week to visit his children who live in Oklahoma happy in
anticipation of seeing them and their children and grand children
again.
The death of Mrs. Staggers which occurred February 22, 1928, was a blow
from which the aged man seemed unable to rally. He refused to leave the
home to go to live with his children, and talked often of the glad
reunion with his beloved wife which he knew could not be long postponed.
He was cheerful but friends noticed that he had failed since his wife's
death.
Mr. Staggers was born on July 31, 1844 in (Whitely Township) Greene
County, Pa. He was the son of Harvey and Alice Shriver Staggers. In 1849
he moved with his parents to Morgantown, West Virginia, where he attended
public school and academy. Later he attended Washington College at Washington,
Penn. His college career was interrupted by the Civil War. He enlisted
July 1, 1864, and served with the 17th West Virginia Infantry.
He was a sergeant major when mustered out July 11, 1865. When he returned home
he began a career as a school teacher, a profession he followed for a number
of years.
On December 25, 1865, he was married to Miss Caroline Virginia Kern and
for 62 years they lived happily together. They moved in 1871 to Broadwell,
Logan county, Illinois and in 1882 came to Cowley county and located in
Vernon township.
From 1895 to 1897 he served as clerk of the district court of Cowley county.
In 1908 the family moved to Winfield, making their home at 721 East Thirteenth.
Mr. Staggers was a member of Lodge 58, A.F. and A.M. and Siverd Post, and
the Presbyterian church. He attended many encampments and reunions
which he enjoyed to the full. On November 12, 1928, he was appointed
aide de camp to the national commander and was elected delegate to the
National Encampment which is to be held at Portland, Maine, in August.
He attended the state encampment in May and plan to attend the national
encampment.
Mr. Staggers is survived by nine children, 29 grand children and 8 great
grand children. The sons are George A. of Littlefield, Texas; Charles
A. of Lamont, Oklahoma; William H. of Enid, Oklahoma, Pearl Staggers
of Winfield; Henry of Newkirk; and the daughters, Mrs. Cash Chappell
of Decatur, Ill.; Mrs. R. H. Rowland of Enid, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Mary A. Cole,
Mrs. Jessie Lee Burdick all of Winfield. Two children are dead, Anna Kline
Staggers who died in 1901 and Daisy (sic - S/B Dorsey Fitch Staggers)
who died in 1874.
The body which was brought to Winfield today, arriving this morning,
was met by a guard of honor composed of members of Siverd Post.

district as a dahlia grower.

since. John and Catherine Staggers, lived on Smith Creek and reared a
large family of children of which Mr. Staggers father, Lisbon Staggers,
was one.

year. He never ceased to be interested in political affairs and kept himself
well informed on national, state and county affairs.

among a number of frontiersmen sent by the colony of Virginia into the

to ward off Indians and hold that territory for Virginia. He settled
outside the limits of the present village of Jefferson, marking out a "tomahawk"
possession on the hillside south of the town, now known as the Haver farm.
Records show that Jacobs Stiger, great-grandfather of Mr. Staggers,
was at Jefferson in 1774. He married a Hollander, Elizabeth Eisiminger,
and they lived in the Jefferson, district, until 1810, when they purchased a
farm on Smith Creek, about four miles south of Waynesburg, where the "white
