ADAM STEPHEN. 2. February 19, 1754 The Pennsylvania Gazette ITEM #16613 February 19, 1754 The Pennsylvania Gazette NEW YORK, February 11. By Captain Gifford from Halifax, we have the following Intelligence: That the Day he arrived there, Colonel Monkton, with two Sloops, and 300 Soldiers on board, convoyed by two or his Majesty Snows of War, were dispatched to Lunenburgh, a Place about 15 leagues West from Halifax, to quell a small Insurrection of the German Settlers there, where they soon arrived, and found the Place in very great Disorder. Capt. Gifford sailed from Halifax the 8th ult. but the Wind coming to South East, he put in the Lunenburgh the next Day, where the Commander of the Garrison gave him the following Account, and Reasons, for the late Disturbance they had there: The French ever studious for the Welfare of Great Britain, it seems, got one [Huffman] to infuse Notions into the Germans Heads, that they were still used, and that the King of England not only allowed them three Years Provisions, but Clothes also, and that they were deprived of many Privileges pertinent to British Subjects, which he could make appear by Letters from England: They often sollicited for Copies of those Letters, but, for various Pretences, were as often denied; which so enraged them, that they seized [Huffman], and, notwithstanding all that the Commander of the Place could do to the contrary, confined him, and by torturing, made him confess Things for Truth, which never entered into the Thoughts of the Gentleman (one Zehabula) he accused; which obliged him to seek Protection in the Fort; after which they remained quiet for some Days, till they were informed (no doubt by some French Emissary) that Zehabula intended to leave the Garrison in the Night, which so enraged them, that they assembled to the Number of 700, and went in one Body to the Water Side, firing their Guns, and making a terrible Noise; and when challenged by the Centry of one of the Block houses, were bold enough to fire upon the Soldiers, but their Fire being returned, two of the Mob were wounded, which intimidated them much, and the sudden Arrival of Colonel Monkton, soon put an End to the whole Affair. They have taken all the German Arms, and left them defenceless. [Huffman] is also taken, and sent to Halifax; where, though, he will be amply satisfied, and may possibly meet a Hempen Reward for his unwearied Diligence and Trouble, in endeavouring to promote the Happiness of so new a Settlement at Lunenburgh. Great Numbers of the Germans are daily out about Mahome bay, cutting Hogshead and Barrel Staves, which they get in great Plenty, and very convenient for Water Carriage to Town. Capt. Gifford had a very dangerous Passage hither; and in the late bad Weather we had here, he being to the Westward of Nantucket, was drove as far to the Southward as Lat. 35, 3, and says, they had so much Snow, that they were all Hands employin throwing if off the SloopDeck and Sails, to prevent her from foundering. He was past all Thoughts of getting in here, and intended to bear away for North Carolina; but a South Wind springing up, he made all the Sail, possible, and arrived safe here on Tuesday last, after being out three Weeks from Lunnenburgh. Four Vessels from Boston and Old York, arrived at Halifax a few Days before Capt. Gifford sailed, with all Kinds of fresh Meat and Poultry fit for that Place. Arrived at Charles Town, South Carolina, from December 10, 1753, to January 22, 1754. Arnott, Parish, Abercrombie, Read and Mason from Philadelphia: Heysham and Jeffery from New York; Elwell, Trout and Burgess from Boston; Tripp and Andrew from Rhode Island. On the 8th of January, the Vessels in Charles Town Harbour amounted to 72 Sail, viz. Ships 16, Snows 22, Brigs 13, 1 Billander, 8 Schooners, and 12 Sloops. 3.
