A PROCLAMATION. WHEREAS Colonel DUNBAR, who has the Command of His Majesty Forces now in this Province, has represented to me, That the Soldiers whose Names are hereunto annexed, duly listed, and belonging to his own Regiment, as also the late Sir PETER HALKETT regiment, and Captain RUTHERFORD, Captain GATE, and Captain DEMIERIE Independent Companies under his Command, have deserted; and tho'all possible Diligence has been used to discover and apprehend them, yet, thro' the Connivance and Assistance of divers of the Inhabitants of this and the neighbouring Colonies, all Endeavours for the Recovery of these Deserters have hitherto been rendervain and fruitless, to the very great Prejudice of His Majesty Service: AND for the better Encouragement to any person or Persons to discover, secure or apprehend these Deserters, the said Colonel DUNBAR hath, by his Engagement for that Purpose, promised and engaged to pay to such Person or Persons who shall apprehend, or cause to be apprehended, any such Deserters from His Majesty Service, the Sum of One Pound, lawful Money of Great Britain, for every Deserter that shall be so apprehended and committed to any publick Gaol, or delivered up to any of the Officers of the Regiment or Company to which such Deserter belongs: AND hath thereby also promised and engaged, that if any of the said Deserters shall, within the Space of four Weeks from the Date hereof, return to their Colours, he or they so returning shall be well received: and excused from all Prosecution and Punishment for such Desertion; and such as are willing to return, are to apply to the next Magistrate for a Pass. AND as a farther means for the Recovery of such Deserters, the said Colonel DUNBAR hath desired me to issue my proclamation to require and command all Magistrates, and other civil Officers. and Persons whatsoever within this Province, to be aiding and assisting therein; I HAVE THEREFORE thought proper, by and with the Advice of the Council, to issue this Proclamation, hereby commanding and requiring all Persons and Persons whatsoever within this Province, not to harbour, conceal, or assist any Deserter from His Majesty Service, on Pain of incurring the Penalty of Five Pounds Sterling for every such Offence, and of being prosecuted for the same, according to the Act of parliament, intitled, An Act for punishing Mutiny and Desertion, and for the better Payment of the Army and their Quarters. AND I do hereby strictly charge and enjoin all Magistrates, Sheriffs, Constables, and other his Majesty Liege Subjects whatsoever within this Province, to be aiding and assisting, to the utmost of their Power, in the detecting, apprehending, and securing, as well all such Deserters, as the Person or Persons who shall be any Ways concerned in the Harbouring, concealing, or abetting them, or any of them, as they will answer the contrary at their Peril. GIVEN under my Hand, and the Great Seal of the Province of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, the Sixth Day of September, in the Twenty ninth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord GEORGE the Second, by the Grace of God Kind of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, and so forth, and in the Year of our LORD One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty five.
