1-Dec.1882. Quoting from Freda Compston "Mother told me that Grandmother Grandon told
her that Grandfather was called to the army (North, I think) in the last desperate days
of the Civil War. The morning he left, he insisted on last minute relations, and 9 mo. to
the day, Clement was born. Counting back from Jan. 20, 1866, would be April 20, 1865, and that
checks out, as the war ended (April 26, 1865) before Grandfather got into it to see any action.
Since he named his son the C.L.V. apparently he had strong sympathies toward the South."
This Edward was a Blacksmith. His nickname was Nebb.

>From Charles R. Jacobs, Brookhaven, Miss
HENRY JACOBS, b. 1795, Md., d. 185 1, Greene Co., Pa. Married
1st Widow Leonard and had 5 children; 2nd Rachel Wood and had
2 additional children, a total of seven:
JACOBS FAMLLY
My great grandfather on my father’s side came from Austria,
but I do not know what year. HE was a carpenter in the ship
yards of New York and from there he went to Pennsylvania,
and settled on the Juanty river, where he built small boats.
He had quite a family, the boys were Eli, John, Henry, Mathew
and Daniel; there were three girls whose first names I do not
know, however, one married John Fuller, another Archdale Ferdye,
and the other Cavalier Pollard.
HENRY Jacobs was my grandfather and he married a widow Leonard,
with two sons, Uni and John. Her maiden name was Witchlatch-
Scotchish-- her brother, Barnet Whitlatch was a Baptist preacher,
he married my father and mother. There were five children by
that marriage, their names were Eli, Henry, Alexander, Barnet
and Marie. My grandmother, Barnet and Marie died, and grandfather
married a Miss Wood; their children were Joseph and Sarah.
Henry was my father, my mother’s name was Mary Smith. I had six
brothers and sisters, James S., Sarah F. , Charlotte M., Emma C.,
Agnes L. and Deborah C. Deborah died with scarlet fever in 1855
when she was three years old, Sarah, Agnes and Emma died in 1862
all within one week, of diptheria, ages six to eleven years. All
of these died in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Father, Mother,
James and Charlotte died in Lincoln, Kansas.
William Leonard, my father’s half brother was a preacher of the
Christian Church. He went from Pennsylvania to Michigan in 1870.
My great grandfather on my mother’s side was Thomas Smith. He came
from Maryland in 1777, to Green County, Pennsylvania, and took up
what they called a Tomahawk Homestead, that was all the land that
he could around from sun up to su n set and mark trees along the
way with a tomahawk. He went up the east side of a stream until
noon, about five miles, and crossed over and came back on the
west side of the stream, and that was his landgrant or homestead.
They named the stream Smith Creek; that creek emptied into
Tenniile Creek at Waynesburg, Pennsylvanla. Thomas Smith built a
cabin and went back to Maryland and married Mary Williams. They
came over the Allegheny Mountains in a two wheel cart drawn by two
oxen and stayed on the land for two years. They had a littel girl
named Martha. The Indians got so bad that they buried their cart an!
d household goods and cut four forked sticks and made two saddles
for the oxen, my great grandmother and the baby rode one ox, and
they put what stuff they could carry on the other and crossed the
mountains back to Maryland.

Subject: [PAGREENE] WOOD Surname
Date: Thursday, March 28, 2002 8:25 PM
I have been enjoying the recent exchange about the WOOD family origins in
Greene County.
Looking for info on the ancestry of Sarah Wood (1781-1847) who married
Benjamin
Huffman (1779-1844). My wife descends from this Greene County
couple.
I have the Huffman line and many of the others that intertwine on down to
today, but
have never found Sarah's parents, lineage.
Can anyone help?
Floyd
